Augmented Reality demo

I recently dived into this technology called Augmented Reality (AR) and was blown away by what it can do. I decided to build an AR demo myself to show on this blog.

Augmented Reality? Huh?
AR is a technology that’s finding it’s way into the world of ICT and advertising. AR is a workfield that enables it to add digital content such as images/video/3d animations virtually to the real-world. Mostly this is done by using a webcam and your monitor or your cellphone. To understand what AR is it’s best to show you a demo.

On internet there are lots of examples and live demos of Augmented Reality. I recently showed one to my friends and they were amazed. Reason enough for me to dive into the technology behind it. Finally I ended up by making an AR demo for this blog:

AR demo
To see the demo in action you will need a printer and a webcam.

Follow these steps to see the demo:

ardemo
  1. Print this .pdf file
  2. Make sure your webcam is connected to your computer.
  3. Click this link to open the demo window.
  4. It will ask you to allow the webcam to have access. Allow it.
  5. Once you see yourself through the webcam, hold the paper in front of the webcam and watch.

Notes: make sure there’s enough light in the room. If you can’t see the magic, try to lay down the paper and point your webcam to it.

The demo was build with the Flartoolkit by Saqoosha.
